Objective: record a complete rock song (guitars, bass, synths, drums and vocals) with a believable result — good sound quality and a clear mix. All of this from home, alone on a PC.
I'm going to walk you through the way I record my songs. It's how I do it… not the only way, certainly not the best one either, but it works for me, so I'm sharing it with you. I'm not a sound engineer, I never took recording or mixing classes, and everything I know I learned on the job, by practicing, by asking people around me, and by browsing specialized websites. In the end, I kept what worked for me, but my methodology keeps evolving over time, based on experience, trial and error, and advice I pick up here and there. Don't hesitate to do things differently if you find it necessary or preferable. Either way, for beginners, this will make a solid guide.
